The Farming year
The farming year starts in mid September when the rams are put in with the ewes to commence the breeding cycle for next year's lamb crop.
We have a mixture of around half the flock of 400 being North Country Mules and the remaining half are crossed with a Suffolk ram.
![]() The ewes remain at pasture until immediately after Christmas.
They are then brought into a spacious building which is very comfortable and well ventilated. They are bedded with straw and fed on a cereal based ration
By housing them during the later stages of the pregnancy we are able to monitor their progress during the pregnancy and spot any problems promptly
![]() The lambs are born inside in February and March and are allowed out as soon as weather permits. They are allowed to graze naturally on grass which has not been fertilised.
![]() The ewes are shorn in late May/early June. Both ewes and lambs are wormed regularly. We are not organic and use antibiotics as necessary but with great care.
The lambs are weaned in July and finished from then until Christmas. The ewes then have a period of rest before the breeding cycle begins again.
