About the farm
We have been producers of quality livestock since 1939 and offer you the chance to buy direct from the farm with our fantastic sausages made from rare breed pork, along with pork and lamb joints.
Delivered in the Rutland area or visit the farm.
Whilst our livestock are not reared organically, we try to rear them sympathetically and in as natural a way as possible.
Our Gloucester Old Spot sows are free range, so have the opportunity to be outside and forage naturally, they also have access to comfortable housing should the weather be inclement.
The are brought in to an individual stable aproximately one week before they give birth. The litter size is usually between 8 and 12 per sow.
if the weather is cold the piglets have the advantage of an infra-red heat lamp for extra warmth. Pigs are extremely intelligent and in a matter of hours learn about the heat lamp. The piglets remain with their mother for 6 - 8 weeks and are then weaned and fed on a cereal based ration.
We have a large orchard and during the autumn we feed apples to the pigs - other than that they are fed no waste products.
We have a breeding flock of 500 ewes, mostly Suffolk and North Country cross.
These remain out at pasture for most of the year.
The are provided with additional forage from November onwards.
The lambing period is during March and the sheep are housed for around 6 weeks before they are due to give birth during which time they are fed a cereal based ration.
The ewes usually have two lambs, but if they have three we may need to supplement the milk.
We like to get the ewes with their new offspring out to grass as soon as possible but this is obviously dependant on the weather.
